Wonder Of The Wharf

Abode2 discovers how interior designer firm, Echlin brought a vibrant and artistic residential interior to London’s Canary Wharf financial district

Canary Wharf Group plc commissioned Echlin to interior design a 1,335 square foot penthouse apartment at their 10 Park Drive building at their new Wood Wharf Masterplan. The building, a 41-storey skyscraper with views of the River Thames and Greenwich Park, is the first residential sales development on the estate in Canary Wharf Group's entire 30-year history. Interior architecture for the building was by MAKE and external architecture by Stanton Williams.

The Echlin design response celebrates the colour and vibrancy of the neighbourhood, as the estate hosts one of the UK's largest collections of public accessible art, and its connection to nature via the wraparound balconies and Canary Wharf's 20 acres of parks, roof terraces and walkways. A curated fusion of mixed media artworks from British and International artists sits alongside specially crafted and locally made pieces of furniture to celebrate the diverse nature of the new district and the city itself.

Samuel Pye, Creative Manager, Echlin comments: “The vision was to create an interior response that pushes the boundaries of what the area is mostly known for, as a centre of business and finance. We have a great respect for Canary Wharf Group’s careful management of the estate over the past 30 years and their quiet commitment to excellence and creativity. The large collection of public art and surprising amount of green space in the area provided a great launch point for us to go out and find some of the most exciting young British artists and furniture makers to combine with international brands, fabric houses and our own designs. In London there are so many ideas and influences to draw inspiration from that it is hard to when to stop. For a brand-new tower in a brand-new district, we had a blank slate to put together an interior scheme that celebrates all things great about the design in the UK, whether that’s British heritage, multiculturalism, new talent or even resilience in a global pandemic.”

Located at the top of the tower, opening the front door of the apartment reveals a gallery style corridor, with artworks from Welsh artist FORMWORKS, leading to an open-plan living area with far reaching panoramic views of Greenwich Park, the Naval College, Crystal Palace and beyond. To maximise the relationship with this view, the interior furnishings were chosen to be low and sculptural, providing plenty of interest without being overly distracting. A curving sofa in Metaphorés jacquard linen fabric inspired by the coastline sits alongside two Little Petra chairs from &Tradition, designed by Danish architect Viggo Boesen in the 1930s, and a vermillion red coffee table from London-based artisans McCollin Bryan uses the rare Scagliola plaster technique which originated in 17th century Tuscany. A bespoke rug made in Scotland and designed by Echlin ties to the space together and an Italian Kriptonite bookshelf houses more curiosities, from vintage vessels sourced from Germany and the UK and more contemporary vases. Two limited edition prints from British photographer Morgan Silk hang on the wall depicting the colourful individuals and antics of the Burning Man festival of Nevada, USA.

The living area has been divided into zones where a bespoke Echlin designed banquette, handmade in Oxfordshire, in a riotous terracotta velvet has been included to create a dining space. A burnished brass and ceramic table from Italian furniture maker Sovet sits underneath two jewel-like pendant lights from another Italian brand, Esperia Luci. Mid-century designed and Netherlands made Pierre Paulin Little Tulip chairs specially upholstered in a French melange fabric from Casamance complete the dining table, with an Asian inspired tea set for styling. Hanging above the space is an original ink artwork from British artist Ross Loveday entitled Preseli IX. In the adjacent kitchen, artisanal foods from East London and handmade wares provide a calming preparation space, with views over the towers of Canary Wharf.

Moving back through the hallway, a bespoke walnut console sits underneath a lacquered mirror, both designed by Echlin and handmade in the UK and Portugal. Also, in this space sits a specially commissioned piece from British textile artist Anna Gravelle inspired by the riverside location.

In the master bedroom, Echlin designed a completely unique bed and headboard, both made in Oxfordshire, using a post-modern inspired blue velvet from French fabric house Metaphorés with Petite Machine bedside lamps from MadeByHand Copenhagen. Above the bed hangs a brass and mirror metal sculpture from C.Jeré brought over from the United States, and bringing the room together is a bespoke console from British designer and maker Loom and a brass and walnut valet from Ligne Roset.

For the second bedroom, Echlin designed a wraparound bed in a mustard velvet with wooden side tables and lamps from Space Copenhagen. An oil diptych from emerging British artist Beth Holmes entitled Snakes and Ladders sits above the bed. A hand carved console from British maker Heliconia in London Plane timber sits across from the bed alongside an expressive Pierre Frey upholstered occasional chair.

The apartment also includes a study, a working from home must have even in central London. A Dedar Milano tiger print upholstered chair sits behind a walnut desk with views East towards the City. A gloss red lacquered sideboard from Italian brand Pianca hosts an Alexander Calder inspired mobile from French brand Volta and a collection of design books. Above the sideboard hangs Greenwich Park – Spring, after Bruegel by Mychael Barratt and adjacent is an Echlin designed daybed in charcoal Boucle wool.

Throughout the apartment a carefully created British-based scent-scape pulls you from room to room. In the core living spaces Mossket from Miller Harris provides a greenery-led freshness with earthy undertones. For the master bedroom, a more refined and elegant bespoke scent from Rachel Vosper Belgravia specially mixed for Echlin brings together tones of sandalwood and hellebore. And in the study the warming scent of True Grace’s Amber No. 31 provides top notes of lemon and bergamot with base notes of amber and myrrh. Continuing with the locally sourced beauty products, hand sanitiser is provided by Gloved by Tom Daxon (winner at the 2021 Global Makeup Awards) and soaps are from Gloved and Austin Austin Organic.

The penthouse apartment includes two balconies providing 230ft² of 41-storey high outdoor space and sweeping views over London. Furniture from France’s Vincent Sheppard and Denmark’s BoConcept create year-round enjoyment and a pared-back planting scheme keeps the focus on the incredible landmarks and river below.

Sam McNally, co-founder of Echlin, comments: “Our work is rooted in bringing together traditional ideas and reinterpreting them to reflect contemporary thinking, but also look forward. The current climate has placed an even greater emphasis of the importance of how our homes are designed, how we use them and their impact on our moods. We are spending even greater amounts of time there and all the key criteria we introduced 10 years ago when we launched Echlin have come to the fore. Well ahead of the pandemic we have been creating homes where thought for people’s lifestyles is at the core of our designs. We recognise that mood, wellbeing and happiness are all shaped by what surrounds us and we are committed to making these spaces as stylish but also as user friendly as we can.”
