Gwynedd Council in Wales plans to significantly reduce English-language education in local secondary schools to promote Welsh as the dominant language in classrooms. Under the proposal, around 70% of education would be delivered in Welsh, despite fewer than 30% of the Welsh population being fluent in the language.
The council argues this move is necessary to boost the number of Welsh speakers and strengthen the language's presence. However, the plan has sparked criticism, particularly from the Welsh Conservatives. Senedd Tory leader Darren Millar called the approach extreme, warning it could alienate people from the Welsh language and strip families of the right to choose English-medium education.
