The Trump administration’s Department of Education has launched investigations into scholarship programs at five American universities amid concerns over potential national-origin discrimination. The universities under review are the University of Louisville, University of Nebraska Omaha, University of Miami, University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University.
At the heart of the inquiry are scholarships reportedly reserved exclusively for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients or undocumented students. Federal officials are examining whether these scholarships violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of national origin.
These investigations reflect a broader governmental effort to restrict foreign student access to U.S. higher education, raising concerns among advocates who argue the policies could limit educational opportunities for immigrant and undocumented students.
As the situation develops, universities and civil rights groups are closely monitoring the implications this may have on scholarship offerings and access to higher education for vulnerable student populations.
