Gasklockan - a striking new architectural landmark in Stockholm – brings a certain something that the vibrant, culture-soaked city has never seen before. James Matthews takes a tour
When remodeling the skyline of a city, residential developments have to pack a punch – not just for those who live there, but the wider community as a whole. With its other worldly design, there’s little doubt that the Gasklockan brings something fresh and challenging to Stockholm’s historic yet modern landscape.
Developed by Herzog & de Meuron and Oscar Properties, the sparkling, glass-inspired villa architecture standing 97 metres above the ground, replaces a former industrial gas holder from the 1930s that for many decades supplied the city with energy. Inspired by the former building, its basic shape is strikingly cylindrical with cuts in the floorplan to draw natural daylight into its inner layout.
The end result - is a dynamic living environment in the guise of a collection of V-shaped apartments with living rooms in one ‘finger’ and bedrooms in the other, all boasting panoramic views over the city and its island chain archipelago.
Located within stunning grounds created by Piet Oudolf, the residential tower also combines public areas with customised residential services in a manner never before seen in Stockholm. When build out is complete – the development will comprise 300 apartments of varying sizes – crowned by upper level penthouse apartments and a stunning rooft op terrace.
The interior concept is characterised by pure and strong materials such as plaster, stone and glass. This creates a space that feels industrial, yet at the same time warm and tactile. Kitchens and bathrooms have been designed and built as stand-alone elements; uniquely crafted living solutions that replicate the feeling of villa space high up in the air.
A central void meanwhile, extends the full height of the tower and provides both a spatial and visual link throughout the tower, while a curved path surrounding the building, provides calm outdoor space where people can meet and enjoy the communal park.
A final community-focused design component; the ground floor, with its impressive atrium, offers everything from a café, a deli and office space for creative businesses to customised solutions and services for the building’s residents.
