Avant-garde contemporary artist, Justine Foord talks to Abode2 about her recent exhibition in Cuba and her unique approach to creative expression
What inspires your collections?
Life experience. Travelling is one of my true passions. In the UK, we have a saying: “Procrastination is the thief of time.” I’ve held onto these words since childhood. I like to keep moving. Through my travelling I have learned about people and culture. I like to embrace the moment and my art represents my solace and my retreat. It’s where I go, to release my emotions.

Candela, translates as fire, the exhibition is “a love story narrated by Mother Nature”. It’s my first international travelling exhibition. Firstly opening in Spain and then moving onto Cuba to be featured during British Cultural Week, hosted by the British Embassy in Havana. My signature method of painting directly on photographs is on display in this fabulous, wider body of work, with gorgeous, moody, colourful landscapes partially obscured with surreal clouds of smoke and atmospheric soot. I’m proud to announce that Candela has been nominated by Nelson Ramirez de Arellano Conde for the ‘Global Award for Photography and Sustainability — Prix Pictet,’ the ninth theme is “Fire.”
What’s next for you?
I like to work on more than one collection at a time, as I tend to work instinctively. As such, how I feel at a particular moment, shapes what I create. I’m currently focusing more energy on my personal artwork, as well as working on building my collection: “The Supers” which is about the long journey of famous global celebrities. I’m also assembling a virtual book of artwork entitled “One Word to Describe2020” which tells the story of friends’ experiences of living through the pandemic. Inspiration can be drawn from uncertain times.
