Bupa Global offer premium holistic health plans that put you in control. Because nothing matters more than your health. In this article, they look at how to care for yourself when you’re stuck in the middle.
If you’ve found yourself in the position of being a caregiver for both your ageing relatives and your children, you’re probably a member of the ‘sandwich generation’.
This time of life can be very stressful, the Centre for Policy on Ageing found that 66% of sandwich carers say it has affected their physical health, while 70% reveal it’s impacted their mental wellbeing.
So how can you ease the pressure and take care of yourself when you’re squashed in the middle? Here’s some of the common problems faced by the sandwich generation and our experts’ advice to alleviating the pressure.
Challenge: Feeling guilty
People who find themselves in the sandwich generation often feel guilty, guilty they’re not giving their parents the emotional support they need, guilty they’re missing out on the kids growing up.
This feeling is natural, but often unwarranted. Accept that you may not always manage everything; allow yourself time to feel guilty, and then move on.
Challenge: Feeling overwhelmed
When you’re facing the large task of caring for two generations it can be daunting, leaving you feeling overwhelmed. It’s important to seek support from extended family and friends. Whether this is lending a hand or being an emotional support. Consider hiring a babysitter, carer, house cleaner or other support staff, it may make a big difference to your wellbeing.
Challenge: Struggling at work
With added responsibilities at home there’s the worry you won’t be able to fulfil your role at work successfully. Be upfront with your colleagues and business partners about your homelife pressures. Together, try and work out the best solution for both supporting you in home and work.
Challenge: Neglecting your own wellbeing
It’s easy to get swept up in lengthy to-do lists when caring for your family, and even easier to forget about looking after yourself.
Not only is your wellbeing important, but by taking care of yourself you’ll be in a much better position to take care of your family. Try to make time for the things you need, whether that’s getting enough sleep, eating well, listening to music or going for a run. It may feel self-indulgent, but your family – young and old – will benefit from it, as you will be more resilient.
