The art of making

26.11.18

We started Maker&Son knowing we wanted to manufacture locally, rather than shipping across the world. We have wonderful partners in Gloucestershire in the UK, in Melbourne, Australia and in North Carolina and California in the US. All three business are family run and have at least 30 years’ experience of making the highest quality products.

Phil in the UK, first worked with Alex 24 years ago when together they created a sofa that become The Conran Shop’s best seller for 20 years. His son Sam now works closely with Felix on the Maker&Son range.

Our fabrics also come from two family-run companies - we love a business with family at its heart. Character, quirkiness, sometime a little chaos, but always passion, experience and complete commitment.

We’re really proud to be working with such incredibly experienced companies and helping to create jobs in each of the countries we manufacture in.

We talk a lot about our commitment to using only natural materials - one of the most important of these is the wool we use, which not only ensures our furniture is so warm and comfy, but is also naturally fire retardant.

In Australia, our wool is sourced from a farm only 30 minutes travel from our manufacturers. As much as possible we are trying to use local materials - it can be a bit tricky to do but we’re working on it.

Our fabrics and materials

Our Linen/Cotton

Our lovely linen/cotton fabric has been lovingly made by the same company in Yorkshire for over 25 years, using Italian linen yarn and English spun cotton. It has a gorgeous depth of colour, a natural look and is irresistibly soft to touch.

We pre-wash and pre-shrink every metre in the mill. As Linen feels softer with every wash, as long as you follow the washing instructions, you’ll enjoy years of comfort from this wonderful fabric.

Our Corduroy

This fabric is a wonderful addition to the Maker&Son range. Our corduroy is woven for us in Italy by a specialist family company who have been making it for decades. In a carefully selected range of warm colours, it combines the softness of velvet with the practicality of linen/cotton. Our corduroy covers are washable and can be tumble-dried – it’s become a real favourite here at Kemps House.

Our Cotton Velvet

For a luxuriously soft and really cosy feel, you can’t do better than our beautiful cotton velvet, perfect for a warmer feel in colder months. Velvet has a slightly more structured look, whilst still giving you our trademark levels of comfort. You can dry clean our velvet covers to keep them looking gorgeous for years to come.
