When a new golf course is named the best in the world just a year after opening, you’d be well advised to take notice and tee up, writes Serena Templeton.
That’s exactly what happened at Terras da Comporta, Portugal, which beat off global competition when it took the title in November. The handywork of David McLay Kidd, who has laid down fairways everywhere from Bandon Dunes to St Andrews Links, The Dunas Course somehow exceeded sky-high expectations to claim the most coveted crown at last year’s World Golf Awards. And yet, with a second course designed by a Masters champion coming this year, the story of Terras da Comporta is only just beginning.
Located an hour south of Lisbon in the Alentejo region, The Dunas Course is McLay-Kidd’s first golf design project in mainland Europe and has quickly earned widespread global acclaim. Occupying a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, the par-71 layout has been created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain and has been built using the highest sustainable practices.

Terras da Comporta will open its second 18-hole championship course, The Torre Course, this summer. Designed by European Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia, the course will be the first major layout that the Spaniard has held overall design responsibility for and is being tipped to become a future star of European golf.
Owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer, Terras da Comporta features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares. Each development will feature two luxury hotels with branded residences, operated by leading hotel brands.
Full details of the real-estate opportunities available are still to be announced but the plans will feature approximately 730 housing plots in total, with prices ranging from €3.5million to €25million.

Alongside Terras da Comporta, Vanguard is developing Muda Reserve, another impressive residential project located in the Comporta area, combining the best of rural Alentejo life with the proximity of the sea. Built from scratch in a natural environment of rare beauty, Muda Reserve is inspired by a traditional Alentejo village, offering all the comforts and security of modern life.
This unique lifestyle proposal offers a range of unique facilities, including modern road infrastructures and water supply, energy, telecommunications, modern street lighting, a latest generation waste treatment station, as well as sports infrastructures, a children's playground, co-working space, food and beverage areas, and convenience stores. In total, the village will have 175 houses, developed in engineered wood (CLT, Woodframe), with high thermal, acoustic and energy efficiency (Nzeb, A+, CO2 neutral), meeting the requirements set by the EU for 2050.
All the units are part of an Energy Community, managed by Greenvolt Communities. Each house is supplied with two Epike bicycles and Tesla's Powerwall, guaranteeing more than 90% energy autonomy from renewable sources.
