Ten Winter Design Trends for 2018

25.10.18

It's hard to believe, but winter 2018 is already upon us. Susan White, director of Iggi Interior Architects considers the latest design trends to suit the cooler months, taking cues from the latest moodboards and fashion catwalks.

1. Oversized florals

Large florals in a pre-Raphaelite style are expected to be found on everything from soft furnishings to canvases and murals this season – from cushions to wall art, expect these oversized flower prints to adorn your living room.

2. Gold

While gold was a trend back in spring, it’s still popular and we’re likely to see more of it this season. From accessories to throws and even carpets, everybody’s going for gold.

3. Jet black

While some may be apprehensive about using too much black in the winter time, monochrome accessories are all in this season. Combine black shelving, pendants and wall pieces with white pieces to create a contrasting balance.

4. Using pinks

Vibrant, old-fashioned pinks are set to be sought after this autumn, as an antidote to the rusty oranges and browns. The idea is to add a bit of warmth to the home. Combine pink velvet with contemporary greys, dark neutrals and metallics for a unique look.

5. Bright shapes

Bold, striking shapes in bold shades help to bring a bit of colour to dull autumn days. Taking cues from late 80’s/early 90’s design trends, clean lines and bold colours on soft furnishings will brighten up the bedroom or living room.

6. Interesting textures

Visually interesting yet cosy textures help to create a practical yet fashionable vibe. Think decorative quilts, rattan lampshades and tufted rugs.

7. Navy blue

Navy is undoubtedly the hottest colour of the coming season and can be teamed with gold for an interesting, Japanese-inspired effect. Think navy walls and simple accessories and you can’t go wrong.

8. Vintage Scandi

We’re all familiar with the concept of hygge by now, but this year trends are pointing back towards 1950’s Scandinavian trends, encapsulating the post-war boom of the area with deep aqua blues and bright yellows.

9. Leather

Leather is making a comeback this season: is there anything more appealing than a classic chesterfield armchair on a cosy autumn/winter night?

10. Autumn maple

This classic autumnal shade shines optimism on the dark days of winter. Pair with gold, copper and brass for a look that exudes sophistication and warmth.
