When it comes to creating remarkable living space, striking the perfect balance between elegance and glamour is a fine art. Miriam Prada, Head Interior Designer at Tenorite tells Stephen Penn all about their latest luxe-living project in London

“Create an interior which is an elegant, modern interpretation of Art Deco.”  That was the synoptic brief given this spring to Tenorite Interiors, in relation to the top-to-toe makeover of a traditional luxury residence located in the heart of St James’s Park. Tenorite Interiors together with sister company, Kalkwarf Architects, were instructed to deliver on a full-service brief; from planning and procurement through to a complete interior design fit-out including fixtures, fittings, soft furnishings and accessories.

“It didn’t take long to establish that this was really quite a special project,” explains Tenorite Head of Interiors, Miriam Prada. “Truth be told - we relished the challenge. Our first priority - was to gain a detailed understanding of the client’s vision and aspirations – interpreting each and every one of the elements, themes and taste persuasions that fit with their outlook and tastes. This allowed us to fully lead on the design process, delivering a stunning and thoughtful interior template.”

The finished result certainly delivers on those intentions. Pass through the oversized statement front door, and the first stylistic attributes to catch the eye are the slate grey painted panelled walls and jet black polished stone floors, both of which create an impactful yet composed entrance. This space is further embellished with focal point placement of a beautiful locally hand-crafted white bronze table, which forms part of a trio of bespoke designed tables including a smaller coffee table and 6 metre dining table.

“The dramatic organic forms of these tables offset the lines of the Art Deco theme and stand out as sculptural elements,” Miriam explains. “To both contrast and compliment these pieces, we selected the finest handmade crystal chandeliers, developed within Tenorite's Italian artisans, and suspended them from the ornate listed ceilings.”

Moving through the property, polished stone has been used to lend a coolness to the public areas, whilst tactile European timber floors add a warmer intimate feel to the private rooms.  A charcoal carpet runner leading to the renovated listed staircase, forms a subtle link between individual floor spaces, as does the dramatic chandelier suspended through the stairwell.

Strategically placed mirrors add further drama, while the choice of Italian brassware which compliments the bronze work incorporated in many of the rooms, including the lift – creates a unified style accent composition.

“Staying true to the Art Deco theme, the interior colour scheme was chosen to be predominantly monochrome, with clever splashes of the clients’ favourite colour - navy blue - through select furniture pieces and soft furnishings,” Miriam adds. “A great example of this are the customised, chrome and blue leather Ralph Lauren arm chairs in the library, which subtly contrast with the warm grey tones of the custom herringbone flooring and the high-gloss lacquered bespoke furniture pieces.”

Most furniture and fixtures within the home are a mix of bespoke and designer pieces, many manufactured or sourced locally, using natural materials. A handful of key pieces were imported from Australia and Europe.

A tour of the property wouldn’t be complete without admiring the immaculate joinery. A secret door within the library bookshelves – an inspired idea of the clients - evokes a whimsical sense of fun, making for a delicious ‘James Bond’ vibe.

Adds Miriam: “Design is very much a mediator. Create that essential spark of connection through different style approaches and anything is possible.”
