Solihull School, an independent school in the UK, is offering pupils two weeks without homework if they reduce their screen time and read books instead. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on smartphones and foster a love of reading.
Head teacher Charles Fillingham emphasised the importance of balancing technological skills with creativity and the joy of getting "lost in a book”. Pupils have shared positive feedback, noting how the scheme encouraged them to reduce screen time and rediscover the benefits of reading.
Students below sixth form can read any book of their choice and share their insights with their class, while sixth-form students have tailored reading to support their studies and future planning.
The scheme aligns with broader discussions on limiting smartphone use in schools, though the UK government has not implemented a legal ban.
