A Six Star Stay

Chalet Zermatt Peak is an award winning 6* luxury catered chalet stunningly designed and set in the beauty of the renowned Swiss ski resort of Zermatt. Abode2 spoke to Paul Rothchild, founder, and former CEO of PLDD Platinum Luxury Design & Development, to hear more about this outstanding, no expense spared, beautifully designed marvel.

Paul started by saying that “It was our intention to create a world leading 6-star Chalet in one of the world’s most prestigious and iconic ski locations, which was clearly achieved and reflected in five International Architectural & Design Award wins in 2020 including: the European International Property Awards Winner for the Best Architectural Single Residence in Switzerland and the World Ski Awards for The World’s Best Ski Chalet.

It wasn’t a case of just building a chalet; we were creating a landmark project which would blend seamlessly but dramatically into the Swiss landscape offering the ultimate in luxury and design with unrivalled views across Zermatt and the Matterhorn.”

Zermatt and the Matterhorn is one of the leading ski locations in the world. The picturesque village of Zermatt is as much about rest as it is about the array of exhilarating activities and sports that it has to offer. A perfect blend of relaxation and good times with breath-taking ski runs and snowboarding have kept it as a world leading ski destination.

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, it would have been a paramount in the minds of the designers, to reflect the beauty. Paul describes how “The high-end luxury design includes floor to ceiling windows with panoramic views across the whole of the village and the surrounding mountain ranges while incorporating its own wellness spa and fitness facilities, fully fitted entertainment area, and the ultimate in technology with dramatic indoor and outdoor spaces.”

The attention to detail in the design is outstanding. The windows allow residence to appreciate the majestic beauty ofthe Matterhorn and the chocolate-box attractiveness of the village of Zermatt. The interior of the chalet has been designed, built and styled to reflect the natural splendour surrounding it.

Internally, the chalet offers five bedrooms all with en-suite showers / bathrooms and dressing areas, luxury open-plan living and dining areas and a fabulous wellness, boasting a stunning indoor / outdoor jacuzzi, gym, sauna and steam room. There is also an external cooking and dining area, ski room and walk-in wine cellar.

The design even goes beyond just the aesthetic as Paul explained, saying “The design caters for clients demanding not just luxury but anonymity with total privacy, featuring a secure underground and lift access. Since its creation, this chalet has attracted both world and business leaders.”

This level of privacy and seclusion was not easily gained, Paul went on to describe how “In order to achieve this we had to push construction boundaries with over 4,000 m³ of mountain rock removed to insert the house into the mountain and create a tunnel access. This was a construction challenge as the site had no access, so most of the project was built using helicopters courtesy of the amazing team at Air Zermatt, to whom we are forever grateful.”Further to thinking about the logistics of design for comfort, luxury and privacy, the project also considered the logistics and impact of the physical building process. Paul describes how “It is a benchmark of our brand to use and source local materials and in the case of Chalet Zermatt Peak, we incorporated natural materials such as local Zermatt stone for flooring and roof tiles as well as silver birch for some details. Each local project requires some luxury staples so we are including Italian marble and Nussbaum (Walnut) wooden flooring into the interior design, while at the same time, no expense was spared on quality and luxury furnishings or the fittings.

The perfect combination of the right location, clever, thought-out design and seamless construction has resulted in an awarding winning Chalet that, as Paul commented, “Personally, for me Chalet Zermatt Peak has become one of the signature bespoke developments for PLDD and one which we are extremely proud of.”
