For over three months, Guernsey has reported no known active cases of COVID-19. Islanders have returned back to their usual activities and schools, shops, bars, restaurants and even nightclubs have all been able to open without the need for facemasks and social distancing. Families are enjoying time on golden beaches and local business meetings can take place without restrictions. The island’s strong visible leadership, comprehensive testing strategy and its ability to control its borders have all helped reduce the impact of this global pandemic on Guernsey; as Guernsey’s most senior politician, Deputy Gavin St Pier, President of the Policy and Resources Committee said at the beginning of the crisis “we’ve got this”. The abundance of community support has played a powerful part in the outcome and the phrase ‘Guernsey Together’ quickly became the island’s new mantra.
As one of the world’s COVID-19 free destinations, Guernsey’s response to the crisis has created considerable interest from those living elsewhere. Relocation enquiries have increased, many prompted by the security and safety of a stable and beautiful environment and a simple and straightforward approach to becoming an island resident.
Guernsey’s government has acknowledged the risk of becoming complacent and is preparing for a range of scenarios should the virus return. Importantly, it is also looking to the future and has recently produced a ‘Revive and Thrive’ Recovery strategy. In setting out its vision, the strategy states: "We will work in partnership to recover our economic prosperity, build on our inclusive community values and capitalise on our many strengths to make Guernsey a safe haven based on sustaining health, wealth and community."
The strategy aims to build a more sustainable economy, growing new sectors whilst addressing pressing social and environmental issues. It will deliver improved infrastructure through major investment, supporting local industry, improving health and wellbeing and building on the strong sense of community shown over the last few months.
Speaking about the strategy, Deputy Gavin St Pier explains: "We now have an opportunity to go beyond simply returning to the pre-virus status quo and can strive to achieve longer-term socio-economic and environmental resilience for our community."
Buoyed by its ability in effectively eliminating COVID-19 Guernsey remains positive for its future. The ambitions of Revive and Thrive are bold and offer excellent prospects for Guernsey’s community. Join us on this journey by making the move to your new island home, simply a better life for you.
