Setting the next generation up for the future through financial literacy is key says Sandaire’s leading wealth manager, Charlotte Filsell. James Matthews investigates
Preparing the next generation for the responsibilities of living with wealth is crucial. Equipping them with the training they need to be responsible shareholders will help them make informed decisions, so that they thrive as the stewards of their family’s wealth.
A key part of our role as a multi-family office is guiding our clients through this process. We support them with all aspects of their wealth – from education to wealth transfer, ownership structures, philanthropy, asset protection and location to business succession planning.
We also take responsibility for investing our clients’ liquidity, in line with their objectives and goals – irrespective of their age. We understand the importance of transparency; our clients know the reasons behind the various investment decisions being made on their behalf. Whatever your current grasp on personal finance, everyone, whether individually or as a family, can gain from becoming increasingly financially literate.
As with most things, learning a skill from a young age tends to be beneficial in creating a life-long habit. Educating the younger generation about their finances is a continuous process, rather than a one-off conversation or event. We often advise our clients to seek expert help to prepare their children or younger family members for the future. And while parents could never be replaced by a third party, experts can offer objective guidance through their knowledge of the responsibilities that come with managing significant wealth. They can also help to put an effective education strategy in place to manage the family’s multi-generational wealth needs, now and in the future.
At Sandaire, we tailor education opportunities, according to individual requirements, taking into account both their situation and interests. We work closely with our families to build a sense of purpose among the younger generations by exploring family histories and helping to align family values – which are often considered the building blocks of a sustainable family enterprise and, indeed, a family’s identity. This can also enhance family cohesion and communication.
As the younger generation increasingly looks to invest in a sustainable, responsible and impactful way, and perhaps move away from a more traditional approach, providing the right and ongoing education will be key to equip them with the understanding and skills they need to be handed over the reins of a family’s wealth, once the time comes.
Through our 25 years of experience, it is clear that ‘responsibility without preparation’ can be detrimental, leading to poor choices. But with the right training in this area, the rising generation will feel empowered to make informed, responsible choices that will ensure their wealth brings opportunities and fulfilment for years to come.
