On the very same slope where the author of Jean de Florette and the La Gloire de mon père wrote several of his most famous depictions of Provence, you'll find the valley's oldest property, le Castelet, where parts of the foundations are from Roman times.
This is the unusual combination of authentic elegance and modern facilities, in a historic magnificent stone-built home. Outstanding outdoor facilities and separate swimming pools for the main residence and the guest house. Ideal for entertaining, for holiday rental, or as an intimate home with breath-taking unimpeded views over the countryside, for an extended family.
Le Castelet was originally a defensive Castle overlooking the surrounding mountains. Part of the stone wall at the base of the tower originates from the Roman period. On this foundation, the property was extended during the mediaeval era.
A leading Monegasque magazine published an article in July 2020 stating that the villa is known to have been the refuge of the French icon, Brgitte Bardot, after her divorce from Roger Vadim in 1957. After acquiring her famous property “La Madrague” in Saint-Tropez, the following year, the Cannes property became her holiday home. It is rumoured that Bardot lived in the house during the 60s and then sold it.
The present owners purchased Le Castelet in 1997, tasked with renovating, updating and restoring while retaining the essential history and the authentic charm. Air conditioning was installed, plumbing, heating and electricity were renewed. Ethernet and a sophisticated sound system integrated.
A new elevator provides access to the three different levels meaning a person in a wheelchair can reach the main swimming pool, the barbecue area and spa directly from the parking area. The 2 amazing swimming pools of 20 and 22 metres were added, which, together with the transformation of the stables into a superb guest house complete this extraordinary residence.
With a glorious view of the Esterel Mountains and with the Mediterranean in the background, lies the unique property, perfect for someone who longs for the true Provencal combined with all the modern features that are expected in the 2020s: Two pools (one for pleasure the other for exercise), outdoor spa, hammam, air conditioning, elevator between pool level and different terraces, floor heating, cold room, sound system (even underwater), complete outdoor kitchen with barbecue and Italian pizza oven, large screen cinema and of course wifi almost everywhere.
At the far end of the property, there is an olive grove with some 90 oil-producing trees; under a row of shady plane trees, there is a classic boule court. On the property, there is also a vineyard with some 300 plants that every year ends up as thousands of wine bottles in the winemaker's cellar. Here are guesthouses and small hideaways in the form of a roofed gazebo or a furnished stone shed adjacent to the vineyard.
Le Castelet is on the market for €5.5 million.
