RER London has unveiled Richmond Square; a rare collection of bespoke new homes and a new residential square in south west London.

Comprising 56 outstanding new residences, Richmond Square presents an extremely rare opportunity to live within the Kew Foot Road Conservation Area of Richmond upon Thames, one of London’s most sought-after boroughs.

The breathtaking restoration and conversion includes a grand, four storey Grade II Listed Georgian townhouse, as well as other surrounding historic buildings of merit, creating new contemporary apartments of the highest quality with the benefit of elegant, historic facades and spacious interior layouts.

Built around a hidden landscaped courtyard, many of the new apartments offer sweeping views over Richmond’s iconic Old Deer Park and onwards to Kew Gardens and Central London.

Internally, Richmond Square has created exceptional new homes that blend contemporary, elegant designs with the traditional character and period features found throughout the historic buildings.

Just 650 metres from Richmond station, Richmond Square is perfectly placed to enjoy all that this prestigious area has to offer: the picturesque banks of the River Thames, Kew Gardens and Richmond’s village-like centre are all minutes away.

A rare combination of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings

Richmond Square blends a unique combination of buildings from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, whilst contemporary new additions are also being created.

Comprising three unique buildings – Rossdale House, Shaftesbury House and Evelyn House – which surround the hidden, private courtyard, the majority of the new homes have been carved from the listed buildings, alongside some completely new apartments.

Thanks to the original floorplans and layouts, all of the apartments are different and include penthouses and loft apartments. A beautiful, two-bedroom townhouse will also stand as a unique addition to the apartment buildings.

A distinguished past

Originally built in the early 18th Century, Richmond Square centred on Rossdale House – the classical townhouse on Kew Foot Road that is seen today. Prior to the formation of the hospital, the house was home to poet and playwright James Thomson, notable for authoring the poem Rule Britannia, between 1739 and 1748.

Following Thomson’s death, it passed into the ownership of his friend, George Ross Esq. Setting about a range of improvements to the then modest cottage, Ross appointed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, widely considered to be England’s greatest landscape gardener, and tasked him with redesigning the townhouse’s two acres of grounds.

In the subsequent years, the house came into the ownership of Hon. Mrs Frances Boscawen, wife of Admiral of the Blue Edward Boscawen, Member of Parliament and legendary seaman. Mrs Boscawen opened the house to the public and displayed a range of relics and memories relating to Thomson’s ownership of the house.

In 1868 the house took on its new use as a hospital, when it officially reopened as Richmond Infirmary. Later additions were added over the next 40 years, whilst 50 beds were reserved for wounded servicemen during the First World War, when a chapel was also designed by Percy Adams – one of the leading architects behind Britain’s Arts & Crafts movement.

Breathing new life into one of Richmond’s most historic buildings

RER London, in partnership with Blue Coast Capital and working with architects Rolfe Judd, is overseeing a comprehensive restoration and redesign of the unique historic buildings. An abundance of original features, fittings and fixtures are being carefully restored and reinstated, meaning many of the new apartments feature details unique to them.

Slate, lead and flat roofs will be restored and reinstated, using matching materials where the originals are no longer available. Original windows will be retained and fully restored within conversion apartments, with the added benefit of secondary glazing to improve sound and thermal insulation, whilst cornicing will be enhanced and reinstated to some homes. Meanwhile, the new extensions will include matching brickwork, stonework and timber windows to ensure they complement the historic buildings.

A refined sense of style

Every apartment at Richmond Square is different, thanks to the range of original floorplans and building layouts. Each home boasts the ultimate sense of understated luxury through the use of natural materials, muted colour tones and vast living spaces. The majority of the properties feature private outside space, including private terraces, patios, balconies and verandas. All have use of the private, landscaped square.

Every detail concerning the interior design and specifications of the homes have been painstakingly considered, with traditional craftsmanship juxtaposed with the latest technology.

Living areas and bedrooms are spacious and flooded with natural light, thanks to the generous period windows throughout the historic buildings. These spaces will be painted in understated, muted tones, whilst fittings and fixtures include polished chrome ironmongery which matches internal doors. High quality handcrafted Italian designed kitchens feature Blanco steel sinks, whilst bathrooms and shower rooms have been elegantly furnished and finished in Carrara marble.

Residents will also benefit from Richmond Square’s Concierge, who is there to meet and greet visitors and owners whilst taking care of daily tasks to make life easier. The concierge also provides an ongoing, discreet security presence, leaving residents with peace of mind should they be away for any period of time.

A rare outer-prime London location

Richmond Square is located in one of the most sought-after areas of London. The striking façade of Rossdale House overlooks Kew Foot Road and onwards to Richmond’s Old Deer Park, whilst Richmond station is just a seven minute walk away, where London Underground and Overground services transport travellers into the centre of London in 20 minutes. For road travel, the A3, M3 and M4 run on either side of the borough and London Heathrow Airport is just 7.4 miles away for international travel.

Commenting, John Roberts, at Richmond Square said: “It’s incredibly rare to find an opportunity to live within the Kew Foot Rood and Old Deer Park conservation areas, let alone an opportunity to live within one of the area’s most iconic historic buildings. Living in these unique, historic buildings means residents will have the chance to own their own slice of Richmond’s distinguished history. Overlooking the Old Deer Park and with the River Thames and the village centre minutes away, Richmond Square could not be better positioned for the wonderful lifestyle Richmond offers.”

Prices start from £699,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.
