Property of the Week

Situated on the picturesque Ceylon Road, close to Brook Green, is a truly unique three-bedroom home at number 26, built by former architect Henry Harrison, now member of the indie rock band The Mystery Jets. Currently home to highly regarded literary agent, Jane Gregory, 26 Ceylon Road is on the market for £1.79 million, through local experts Finlay Brewer.

Henry Harrison built 26 Ceylon Road in 1987 when he was the owner of number 27. After acquiring a plot of derelict land directly adjacent, he built the 1,587 sq. ft. home using bricks from the remnants of a collection of large houses on Brook Green that had been demolished.

The result was a spectacular home arranged over four floors, with an impressive mezzanine on the lower ground and ground floors. Large full-sized roof windows create an atrium effect onto this part of the home, with natural light filling each space. Occupying a tight plot - just 4.1 metres in width - the property benefits from exceptional depth, which creates a unique exterior that stands out from the Ceylon Road street scene.

Following the completion of 26 Ceylon Road, Henry Harrison sold his home next door to Hollywood actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who lived there with French actress, Isabelle Adjani, in the early 1990s.

Upon selling the home Harrison left his architectural practice to set up the indie rock band The Mystery Jets with his son, Blaine. The band has gone on to release several albums and supported bands such as The Arctic Monkeys, whilst Harrison was voted the 18th coolest Rockstar by NME magazine in 2018.

Continuing its connections with high-profile individuals, 26 Ceylon Road’s current owner is Jane Gregory a successful literary agent, who has represented some of the UK’s best-known authors of crime, thrillers and suspense fiction, across a 30-year career.

Paul Cosgrove, Director at Finlay Brewer, commented: “This is a truly wonderful contemporary home that just oozes character and charm. The high-profile connections really add to the narrative here, however, the size and unique design combine to create a special property that provides an oasis of calm in the heart of the city.”

The light grey façade of 26 Ceylon Road, with a section of large window panels and a large nautical style ‘porthole’, brings its own character to the street of colourful terraced homes.

The property is entered on the ground floor, which is a mezzanine floor looking down onto the lower ground floor. The entrance leads into the large reception room that is bathed in natural light through a spectacular atrium style glazed wall and inclined roof, with views directly onto the garden. There is a study off this upper reception which could provide the perfect home office space.

Down to the lower ground floor, via the central staircase, there is an open-plan dining room and double height reception room with full length bi-fold doors leading onto a spacious walled garden, with a central water feature providing a peaceful and tranquil area. A practical kitchen, with integrated appliances, is accessed through the dining room.

The upper floors have three bedrooms, a bathroom and en-suite shower room, including the principal bedroom suite on the top floor.

Ceylon Road is a quiet residential street that has attracted several high-profile residents through the years and is just moments away from some of West London’s best schools, including Godolphin and Latymer School and St Paul’s Girls’ School. Goldhawk Road (Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines), Hammersmith (Piccadilly, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines) and Shepherds Bush (Central line, London Overground and Southern train services) stations are just a short walk away.

Available for £1.795 million, viewings at 26 Ceylon Road are strictly by appointment only. For more information contact sole agents Finlay Brewer on:  020 7371 4171 or visit: www.finlaybrewer.co.uk
