Milan’s leading example of sustainable urban design
“People are starting to think about easier and more sustainable lifestyles in the heart of the city” – Kelly Russell, Head of Sustainability and Communication of COIMA
As the world emerged from lockdown, many cities witnessed its residents embrace its green spaces and nature over previous haunts of shops, entertainment complexes and suburban leisure centres. Now, as concerns around climate change grow and the experiences of lockdown unite cities and generations, the demand for healthy and sustainable urban environments, living well and good quality places is greater than ever. No more so than in Milan.
Porta Nuova, a modern new district, became a hub of city life, the variety of open spaces across its central public park, botanical gardens, outdoor meeting places and activities acted as a tonic to the wider restrictions. And it’s little wonder. With a design approach that put people at the heart of the regeneration, Porta Nuova effectively caters to fundamental human needs of connection and interaction – with each other, with nature and with the world around us – to improve quality of life.
Porta Nuova is well recognised worldwide for its exemplar approach to sustainable city design; one that fights climate change, promotes wellness and diversity, and cultivates economic prosperity. The flagship project of Italian real estate company, COIMA, the 30ha regeneration has received many international accolades for its innovation and quality. It is also a leader in terms of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications in Italy with over 40 buildings in place already, including 26 either Gold or Platinum Standard.
It is a highly sought-after pedestrian-centric neighbourhood and business district set around one of the largest open public parks and botanical gardens in the city, BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano. Its 500+ trees, set out in immersive ‘circular forests’, vegetable gardens, flowered lawns, and dedicated spaces to play, relax and exercise have become a green heart for the city. It hosts a diverse programme of more than 200 free cultural events and activities each year – covering everything from the arts to nature and wellbeing. Already seeing 10 million visitors a year, its footfall will reach 15 million by over 2025.
The most widely recognised, and a focal point of Porta Nuova, the Bosco Verticale is one of the most renowned symbols of green urban development in the world. Designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, the two ‘vertical forest’ buildings, feature over 15,000 plants and 90 different species of trees, shrubs and floral vegetation. This iconic building pioneers a new approach to urban living, connecting people and buildings with nature, while increasing biodiversity and absorbing air pollution and CO2.
With the inaugural concept so well received, a second vertical forest is planned for the district. Today, Porta Nuova is a thriving sustainable neighbourhood, its quality of life recognised globally and inspiring urban design across Milan and cities worldwide.
