Why sailing in the Balearics is hard to beat

The stunning Balearics offer some of the best sailing in the Mediterranean. Jose Navas, founder and CEO of Charteralia explains why a life on the ocean wave, especially for holidaymakers, is hard to beat.

Hi there. My name is José Navas, CEO and founder of Charteralia. I also live and work as a skipper on one of our catamarans.

My greatest satisfaction, Charteralia, a boat charter company in the Balearic islands. It took me a while, but I finally turned my passion for the sea and sailing into my profession and my way of life. We started with a tiny sailboat back in 2010, then a catamaran in 2011,  and today we manage a fleet of over 40 boats throughout Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca, and Menorca.

From the first day I discovered that sailing was extremely addictive, not only because of the direct contact with nature and the sea, but also by the number of factors affecting your performance, and especially the almost instantaneous measurement you can get of the results since any small adjustment affects the speed of the ship, together with external elements.

When our sailing boats in Ibiza and Formentera are hired for some of our famous Ibiza boat trips, we always return to port in San Antonio by sunset. Same for private cruises in Ibiza unless it’s a weekend sail.

But when our yachts are rented for more than one day and our customers wish to sleep at anchor, then we spend the night at a cove that is well protected from the wind and especially from the waves, so we are safe and comfortable for a good night sleep. For this reason the weather will play a key role in choosing where to anchor our rental vessels and the itinerary to follow. The prevailing winds in the summer are East winds, and usually quite mild, but we can’t lower the guard, and the skipper will always keep an eye on the weather forecast.

One or two-week routes around Ibiza and Formentera

We also offer one and two week routes around Ibiza and Formentera on the vessels that we offer for Ibiza boat hire. Since the check-in takes place at our base at the port of San Antonio, we can spend the first night at a nearby cove Cala Bassa , Cala Conta, or Conejera Island. Then go down to Cala Tarida or Cala D’hort, and continue to the SW of Ibiza where we can find the magic islet of Es Vedra. Then Cala Porroig or Cala Jondal, south of Ibiza, or even book a buoy in Ses Salines. We will continue to Espalmador Island (turquoise waters like the Caribbean), where we can also reserve a buoy since anchoring is prohibited on the bottoms of Posidonia, very common on this tiny island. The next day we will head South, to the island of Formentera, and we can anchor by the famous beach of Illetes. The following day we will arrive at Cala Saona where we will anchor for the night and will jump in the most turquoise waters in the Mediterranean.

From delectable catamarans through to elegant sailboats, sleek yachts and stylish speed boats – Charteralia can find the right set sail match for you.
