Out in the open

Open plan living spaces, floor to ceiling glass and bi-fold doors can enhance indoor-outdoor flow and help to bring the outside in. But this can be taken one step further by using co-ordinating flooring materials, as James Matthews discovers

When it comes to tiling, natural materials can be used both internally and externally for a statement finish, but it can prove a costly option, not to mention one that requires ongoing maintenance. Stone, as an alternative, is also at risk of deterioration if not regularly sealed, unlike porcelain which is resistant to staining and totally fade-proof.

Offering an easy-care solution to these wear and tear problems, Valverdi Indoor-Out is an inspired range of porcelain tiles designed specifically for indoor-outdoor living spaces. Each internal tile has a co-ordinating 20mm thick outdoor tile that has the same look, but with enhanced slip resistance.

The outdoor tiles can be installed on patios, terraces, balconies and around swimming pools, while the indoor tiles look ‘on trend’ fantastic in kitchens, dining areas and extensions. The low threshold and wide frameless space of bi-fold doors combined with the matching tiles creates an almost seamless link between the outdoors and the inner workings of the home.

The tiles are made from strong vitrified porcelain; the outdoor version is double the thickness of a standard internal tile and completely frost proof, to withstand heavy garden furniture and all types of British weather. Resistant to moss and mould growth, they also have an R11 rated slip resistant surface, so they’re safe for use in wet areas.

As the tiles are man-made, there’s a high level of consistency throughout individual batches, allowing homeowners to create a modern, clean look. The rectified and calibrated design means they can also be installed with narrow grout joints externally to further enhance the connection between the floors.
