For the last five years Rolex have outfitted the backstage space at the Oscars, so that the celebrities of this star studied event were able to hang out in style. This year, the luxury timepiece purveyors decided to style the space with a polar exploration theme.
For the 2020 edition of the Academy Awards, in Los Angeles, Rolex conjured an otherworldly lounge based on the theme of “polar exploration,” a longstanding field of interest for the venerable watch maker. The Greenroom design feels like a cozy, wood-paneled observation station, where guests are surrounded by vitrines outfitted with icy polar landscapes fashioned from blocks of Styrofoam. Slanted mirrors help deepen the sense of distance and spatial expanse, while specialized lighting simulates sunrise, sunset, and the passage of time in between. The effect is deeply cool.
Rolex Explorer II, embedded in a table, served as the centrepiece of the Greenroom. Meridian lines emanating from the watch, mirrored by a sculptural overhead fixture and radiating wood beams on the ceiling, draw the eye from the timepiece to the simulated Arctic vistas beyond. More than just a magical landscape, the Greenroom design underscores Rolex’s focus on the preservation of the natural world in the face of climate change, a commitment formalized last year in the launch of the company’s Perpetual Planet initiative.
