Sun, sand and sea are key factors when most look for a retirement getaway, making it no surprise that Mexico is now topping the list of destinations this year.
According to the 2017 Global Retirement Index, which ranks the top 24 destinations across the globe, Mexico has come out trumps due to its diverse geography.
Mexico always features among the top 10 destinations in the Index, and usually among the top five.
It's already home to more North American expats than any other country in the world.
Well over a million U.S. and Canadian citizens are estimated to live in communities throughout Mexico, full- or part-time.
From white sand beaches to high mountain cities, Mexico gives expats a broad range in locales.
It is rich in casual beach towns, vibrant Spanish-colonial cities, and small country villages.
The climate ranges from moist tropical heat to dry desert and everything in between and all of this combined makes it easy to see the appeal.

"Mexico really does offer a modest cost of living and a high quality of life," says Glynna Prentice, International Living's Mexico Editor.

And today, with the Mexican peso at historic lows against the U.S. dollar Mexico is more affordable than it has been in years.
Expats report that it feels like Mexico is on sale meaning you get get real luxury for a lower cost.
One spot to watch is Chileno Bay Resort & Residences in Cabo San Lucas.
The beachfront property opened in February 2017 as a 29-room luxury hotel, and a residential villa community with 33 contemporary two-, three- and four-bedroom villas.
Work has now begun on Phase Two of development after 90% of the Phase One villas were sold or under contract before opening day.
The $2.7 million Pacifico 2 is part of Phase 2, one of 22 four-bedroom villas that will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Construction began two months ago.
This first-floor villa has two ocean-facing master bedrooms in the front and two more bedrooms in the back of the unit. Both of the masters have outdoor showers.
