For over a decade, television audiences have watched psychologist and relationship expert John Aiken navigate the complex dynamics of modern romance on Channel 9’s Married at First Sight. Yet, behind the scenes, a equally compelling relationship has been unfolding in the world of high-end real estate.
Alongside his wife—the accomplished interior designer Kelly Swanson-Roe—Aiken has curated a remarkable property footprint across Sydney. The design-focussed duo recently executed a flawless transition from historic preservation to sun-drenched European aesthetic, executing a multi-million-dollar property swap that perfectly captures the evolving tastes of the modern luxury demographic.
Before embarking on their latest venture, the couple's primary canvas was a grand, 19th-century sandstone estate known as "Tyneside," nestled in the leafy enclave of Willoughby East on Sydney's Lower North Shore.
Originally built in the 1880s for one of the region's pioneering families, the heritage-listed residence boasted flawless period foundations that had weathered more than a century of fluctuating design trends. When the couple acquired the property in 2019, its grand spaces were notoriously dark, draughty, and isolated.
Harnessing her design acumen, Swanson-Roe set out to execute a "restrained Victorian" transformation—an approach aimed at respecting the structural heritage without veering into pastiche or faux-history. The resulting design narrative was a masterclass in quiet elegance:
- The kitchen and splashbacks were anchored in opulent New York marble, sourced directly from Italian quarries.
- Wide planks of French oak flooring were introduced throughout to ground the home, injecting immediate visual warmth.
- Ornate original ceiling mouldings, wrought-iron lacework, and historic sandstone feature walls were balanced with imported brass chandeliers and curated contemporary art.
Rather than focussing on an "Instagram-ready" façade, the layout was cleverly adapted for familial longevity.
Swanson-Roe introduced an effortless indoor-outdoor flow unusual for properties of the era, deploying 16 independent doors that connected interior living spaces directly to sweeping balconies, manicured grounds, and a travertine-tiled pool area complete with a cabana, hot tub, and outdoor cinema setup.
Following the meticulous completion of the project, the landmark estate was brought to market with a guide of $5.8 million, successfully exchanging hands at auction to allow the couple to focus on their next major architectural passion project.
