Any UK citizens looking to buy property in Austria should do so before the 31st March, to avoid any Brexit related uncertainty. Under current laws only EU citizens can buy in Austria, and whilst there are ways around this, it will slow down the purchase process and potentially increase buying costs.
Giles Gale, MD of Alpine Property Finders (APF), advises that: “I have been surprised by the number of potential UK buyers who do not realise the repercussions that Brexit has for their Austrian ski property dreams. Whilst they might still be able to buy, the process will be much slower and likely more expensive, as it may be necessary to set up a company through which they can buy.
“Our advice is clear, if you’re considering buying an Austrian ski property make sure you have signed an initial purchase offer, or ‘kaufanbot’, well before our expected departure date.”
