La Tomatina festival attracts holiday home investors to Valencia

Every year Valencia goes tomato mad in celebrating one of the town’s more unusual historic events. Jolanda van de Streek from ImmoVario tells Abode2 more about the Spanish town and the celebration that attracts tens of thousands each year.

Not every holiday hotspot can boast turning a historic food fight into a cultural phenomenon, but the Valencian town of Bunyol made this happen.

The story goes that on the last Wednesday of August in 1945 - during the annual Gigantes y Cabezudos (Giants and Big Heads) procession - a group of young men decided to join in by creating a gap between participants.

In doing so, they barged into one man, who flew into a rage and grabbed the nearest thing to him - some tomatoes from a stall - and threw them at the youngsters. The men - along with the rest of the crowd - grabbed as many tomatoes as they could and retaliated by throwing them at each other until the police stopped them in their tracks.

A year later, the same group attended the parade again, this time armed with tomatoes from their own homes. The police stopped the altercation yet again but they had started a trend which was to become La Tomatina.

Banned from 1950 to 1957, it was in 1983 when it was featured on a major Spanish TV channel that it truly sparked the Spanish nation's interest. Now a major event in an otherwise small Spanish town, La Tomatina draws crowds from far and wide with participant and visitor numbers increasing year on year.

An impressive 115,000 kg of tomatoes are loaded on and off trucks for the event which gets very messy – so much so that participants are advised to take a change of clothes for the journey home.

The ticketed event – run by the town council - attracts crowds of up to 50,000 – in addition to the 9,000 residents of Bunyol – and has helped turn Valencia into a vacation hotspot and the ideal spot  invest in property. Due to the crowd masses descending on the town in August for La Tomatina, investing in real estate has proven a lucrative affair – as well as offering great cultural and gastronomic opportunities to boot.

A holiday home in Valencia gives you access to events such as La Tomatina and Las Fallas which are held in March as well as fabulous beaches, locally produced wine, seafood and of course paella. Valencia is easy to get to from regional airports across Europe.
