Kyn Bickley Opens Its Doors

Innovators in later life care, KYN has opened the doors to its first care home in Bickley, Bromley. Ahead of its first residents already settling in, the brand-new care home hosted a preview event last month for the local community in Bromley.

The exclusive two-day preview event was attended by over 100 local people from key pillars of the community, including the Mayor of Bromley, and Councillor Hannah Gray. Attendees were welcomed with a personalised tour of KYN BICKLEY, which guided them through The Great Room, The Eden Room, the cinema room and the KYTH Spa, which provides a variety of treatments for residents.

All the rooms have been styled by leading British interior designer Nina Campbell and renowned art curator Adam Ellis. With 86 private bedrooms, attendees were shown the one-of-a-kind beds - a collaboration between Nina and specialist bed company Accora. While in keeping with the homely ambience, the nursing beds are specifically developed to be beautiful, as well as being adjustable profiling beds which move up and down to assist residents’ needs.

Despite the winter weather, people were also able to view the sensory garden. These landscaped gardens have been specially designed to offer a calming sensory experience for residents. Sensory planting is used to support residents living with dementia in particular, as colour, touch, and scent can relax residents, as well as help encourage sensory interaction to develop and improve the senses.

The tour ended with a pianist performing in the Eden Room, the heart of the home. This room overlooks the landscaped gardens and unites the outdoor surroundings with harmonious décor. Here, the attendees enjoyed canapes, drinks, light bites and speeches from Professor Martin Green, CEO of Care England, Caroline Naidoo, Managing Director of KYN and the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Hannah Gray. Those also in attendance included both head boy and head girl of St George’s CE Primary School, Bromley.

Professor Martin Green, CEO, Care England commented at the opening:

“The entire focus of KYN BICKLEY is on the people that are going to live there. It is an environment in which people will live and really enjoy their lives. One of the things I’m so impressed by is the values that underpin KYN’s approach to delivering care. However wonderful the environment is, it’s also about those values and about how people are respected and engaged when they live in a community - I really think those shine through in KYN BICKLEY.”

Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Hannah Gray added: 

“I am in awe of KYN BICKLEY. The development is beautiful. From what I’ve seen and the people I’ve met, I can see the staff have come on board with a passion to care for the people they will look after, and the technology in the rooms will help make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible for residents.

“Bromley has a huge heart. The people are extremely caring. And I can see this is going to be a very important part of that community.”

To date, KYN BICKLEY has employed 40 people from Bromley and the surrounding areas, with more appointments to come. With an estimated over 330,000 over 65s in Kent and over 24,000 people estimated to live with dementia in the region*, KYN BICKLEY has been launched to not only care for its residents but also support the local community in Bromley. The attendees have fed back on how impressed they were with the facilities KYN is providing and have praised KYN for raising the game when it comes to the provision of care.

KYN has donated to Age Concern Bromley and to the Mayor’s Charities as a thank-you to everyone who attended.
