In a landmark move for higher education in the UK, the Universities of Kent and Greenwich have announced plans to merge, creating the country’s first “super-university.” The new institution, provisionally named the London and South East University Group, aims to tackle financial challenges and streamline operations by consolidating administrative and support services.
Despite the merger, both universities will retain separate student admissions processes and continue to award their own degrees, ensuring continuity for current and prospective students. Once operational, the combined university will enrol nearly 50,000 students, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in the country.
The merger is scheduled to take effect in spring 2026 and reflects a growing trend among UK universities to explore collaborations and structural changes in response to financial pressures, rising operational costs, and the competitive global education market.
University leaders have described the move as an opportunity to enhance academic offerings, improve student support, and strengthen research capabilities while maintaining the unique identity and heritage of both institutions.
The creation of the London and South East University Group marks a significant development in UK higher education, potentially serving as a model for future collaborations among universities seeking sustainability and growth.
