Abode2 luxury property magazine reports that Cadogan has announced plans to create Central London’s first “heritage forest” in Knightsbridge.
The landowner has joined forces with fashion giant Louis Vuitton and rewilding organisation Sugi on the initiative, which will see Pont Street planted up with 630 native trees and shrubs.
The 240 square metre pocket of greenery, near LV’s store on Sloane Street, is designed to be self-sustaining within three years; the aim is to increase the neighbourhood’s bio diversity and inspire similar efforts to improve ecological sustainability in urban areas.
The planting scheme will follow the complex “Miyawaki” methodology, giving its forests four layers – shrubs, sub-trees, trees and a canopy – with at least three trees planted per square metre. The native plants are selected based on flora and fauna research, a soil survey and vegetation report.
Species including Red Campion, Sessile Oak, Hawthorn and a forest floor dense with shrubbery and wildflowers will create an “ideal habitat for at least 80 species of insect”, according to the team, while keeping maintenance to a minimum.
Cadogan recently launched its 10-year sustainability strategy, Chelsea 2030, which maps out how it aims to hit net zero and improve air quality, green infrastructure and biodiversity across the estate – including an increase in Urban Greening Factor by 25% – over the next decade.
Plans were announced in 2019 for a large-scale upgrade of Sloane Street, billed as the most significant improvements since the thoroughfare was originally commissioned by the 1st Earl Cadogan in the 1700s.
