Powys councillors have approved plans to establish the first fully Welsh-medium secondary school in mid and south Powys at the Builth Wells campus of Ysgol Calon Cymru. The decision aims to address concerns about inadequate Welsh-language provision in the region.
By 2029, the Builth Wells campus will become Welsh-only, with English-speaking students relocating to the Llandrindod Wells campus. Currently, many Welsh-speaking pupils travel long distances to access Welsh-medium education. Supporters argue the move will strengthen bilingualism and improve curriculum options, while critics raise concerns over transportation logistics and demand for such a school.
