Fab Four

Abode2 visits the newly unveiled “Fab Four” show apartments at the Tobacco Warehouse in Liverpool that provide a homage to local legends, The Beatles

The four large dressed show apartments at the Grade II listed Victorian Tobacco Warehouse in Liverpool, a development by Stanley Dock Properties, overlooking the waters of Stanley Dock, provide a homage to The Beatles, Liverpool’s most famous rock band, with different rooms featuring specially curated limited edition Beatles artwork.

Tobacco Warehouse is being transformed into the city’s most exclusive new residential address providing 550 exceptionally spacious and airy one, two and three bedroom Manhattan loft style apartments, including penthouses, complete with 100,000 square feet of dock level commercial space and lifestyle amenities.

Tobacco Warehouse is the residential part of the £250 million (completed value) regeneration of Stanley Dock, built between 1848 and 1901, into a leading leisure destination, including the Titanic Hotel, created in 2013-14 from the adjacent North Warehouse, and now one of Liverpool’s most luxurious hotels with a restaurant/grill, cocktail bar and health club.

Like Stanley Dock The Beatles rock band are an integral part of Liverpool’s history and built their reputation playing clubs in the city. Founded in Liverpool in 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and active between 1960-1970, the band acquired the nickname “the Fab Four”. When they toured America in 1964 “Beatlemania” became global and they are now regarded as the most influential band of all time. When John Lennon dated and later married (1969) Yoko Ono she was (unfairly) blamed for the splitting up of The Beatles.

In order to dress the Tobacco Warehouse show apartments with Beatles artwork Stanley Dock Properties purchased many of the limited edition pieces at ‘Double Fantasy – John & Yoko’, a 2019 Beatles Exhibition that was held at the Museum of Liverpool. This exhibition drew on artwork from Yoko Ono’s own private collection, some of which had never been displayed before.

In dressing the four show apartments Stanley Dock Properties invisaged that each could provide a funky Manhattan style pad for one of the “Fab Four” (John Lennon actually lived in New York). This creative inspiration has resulted in a series of visually striking, highly individual, dressed apartments that are rich in character and colours and combine iconic Beatles artwork with Art Deco style furniture, sculptural light fittings and vintage and contemporary accessories.

The Tobacco Warehouse show apartments feature a trio of iconic New York t-shirt photographs of John Lennon in Manhattan, which were taken in 1974 by photographer Bob Gruen. The show apartment living rooms also display a series of psychedelic Beatles posters, which were created by Vanity Fair photographer Richard Avendon in 1967 using colour manipulation to create hallucinatory Day-Glo portraits of the Liverpool band brimming with symbolism of psychedelia, peace and love. The psychedelic images helped launch The Beatles groundbreaking eighth studio album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.

Other Beatles images that appear throughout the show apartments include rare outtakes from a 1963 session with Vogue photographer Norman Parkinson whilst The Beatles were recording their second album. The Tobacco Warehouse show apartments also feature the classic Beatles Pillowfight photograph which was taken at the George V Hotel in Paris in 1964 by photographer Harry Benson, who also documented their first US tour.

The show apartments also display one of the rarest Beatles posters in existence, the ‘Mad Day Out’, which was taken in 1969 and shows the Beatles by the banks of the River Thames and is an outtake from their publicity photoshoot for ‘The White Album’.

John Doherty, Group Creative Director at Stanley Dock Properties says: “The apartments within the Victorian Tobacco Warehouse are very Manhattan loft in style with dramatic double height living spaces and industrial architectural features such as exposed brick walls, cast-iron columns and heritage style decorative metal staircases.

Because the apartments are so rich in character and style we wanted to avoid having dressed show apartments that were bland and dull so we decided to use The Beatles as creative inspiration and the result is “must visit, must see” living spaces that really are a “Fab Four” that showcase limited edition Beatles artwork.”

Tobacco Warehouse, originally built in 1898-1901, has a grand and elegant 14 storey façade with tall windows, ornate pediment, brick pilaster columns and lettering carved in brickwork and terracotta. The voluminous interiors have generous ceiling heights and a bright and airy ambience with natural light cascading in through the tall windows.

Between 2015-2021 work commenced to transform the Tobacco Warehouse into one of Liverpool’s leading residential addresses and the building now features a beautiful collection of new loft style apartments that retain unique heritage features and are extremely large and airy in size, ranging from 950 square feet up to 2,750 square feet.

Ready for immediate occupation the apartments for sale comprise one, two or three bedroom duplex apartments and on the top floor two bedroom penthouses that open onto private wrap around terraces. All the duplex apartments have dramatic double-height living rooms and upper mezzanine levels, providing a sense of volume and light rarely seen in Liverpool. Each offer a combination of city, river, dock and/or courtyard views.

Each duplex has an open plan fully fitted kitchen with integrated applicances and two or more fully-fitted luxury bathrooms with full height mosaic tiles and ceramic floor tiles. The principal bedroom suites have an ensuite bathroom and space for wardrobes and dressing.

The off plan Phase 1 release of apartments at Tobacco Warehouse was hugely successful and resulted in over 100 homes now sold/reserved and some 60 homes occupied. With apartments now build complete and available for immediate occupation Stanley Dock Properties is now undertaking the main Phase 2 launch of the development including the release of new dressed show apartments, larger showcase apartments and the penthouses.

Apartments at Tobacco Warehouse are available priced from £235,000.
