Education Cooperation Between China And South Africa

Representatives of the Chinese Embassy visited Nelson Mandela University this week to explore higher education cooperation. Nelson Mandela University and China’s Zhejiang Normal University signed a Memorandum of Understanding back in 2018 and Mandela University’s Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences and the African Institute of Zhejiang Normal University have proposed a think tank cooperation initiative. These efforts will also enhance the educational cooperation between the two countries.

Scholarships, student and staff exchanges, Mandarin short learning courses, a virtual academy, technology, and laboratory experiences will all be discussed. Mandela University also has links with the Ocean University of China. China has more than 1200 universities.

The Chinese Embassy in South Africa was represented by Education Counsellor Mr Xudong Li and Education Officer Mr Yuanzheng Li. The Director of the South African Branch, Institute of Africa Studies, Zhejiang Normal University Ms Arielle Zhaoyi Liu also formed part of the delegation.

The DVC Research, Innovation and Internationalisation Dr Thandi Mgwebi, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Prof Sibongile Muthwa, acting DVC Learning and Teaching Dr Moeki Moeng, Dr Priscilla Mensah, Acting Senior Director: Office for International Education and Dr Kwezi Mzilikazi, Director: Research Support and Management as well as staff members from the International Office and the faculties represented Mandela University.
