Decor is always awash in aesthetic “cores” — Barbiecore, swagcore, bouclécore, dare I mention Cooriecore (och aye!), with many of us bouncing like Tigger from trend to trend with titivating intent. But as the season of mellow mists and fruitfulness descends - the standout design trend catwalking its way into our consciousness is dopamine home dressing, with the emphasis on happiness, self-expression, colour and creativity. First researched by fashion psychologists in the early 2000s, this upbeat style accent is based on the premise that the tonal palettes, shapes, patterns and textures that we really love should be welcomed with open (plan) arms into our personal space – even if it goes against conventional decorating advice. Take bold, intense shades for example – they not only generate uplifting physiological and psychological responses, they also have the power to trigger nostalgia and bring back positive memories. And there’s no rule book when it comes to choices – think all-out juxtaposition. From centre staging a custom-made piece to crafting something handmade - transmitting feelgood vibes via decor is entirely within your subjective control. Take a space where neutral furnishing is your baseline. Try pairing heritage patterns like herringbone, paisley or chevron with a touch of playfulness - pops of vintage-inspired colour such as mustard yellows, bubble gum pinks, fiery reds, blacks and brilliant blues. Incorporate relaxed styling for comfort and feel your stress receptors shift down a gear with the laid-back beauty. In personal spaces like bedrooms or studies, dynamic pattern can enhance visual interest. Traditional-with-a-twist designs, botanic prints and abstract patterns catch the eye and create a sense of movement. Try Toile de Jouy or a Chinoiserie feature wall and couple with funky floor cushions, rugs and throw pillows for a softly, softly finish. In the kitchen, don’t underestimate the value of a statement appliance. Experiment with retro collections. For the walls, a contrasting backsplash with Arts and Crafts or a Carnival tile is sure to put a smile on your face.Best of all, you can also enjoy a dopamine hit while reducing your carbon footprint. Give pre-loved accessories a new lease on life with recycled or upcycled designs. Second-hand furniture and market art are prime what-nots for the taking and offer a healthy dose of whimsy.
