Design in Mind

E John Lewis has been a designer and maker of Architectural Glass for almost 20 years. From design to installation creating pieces that are as much works of Art as they are practical in nature.

Whether it be a simple fanlight design, an elaborate decorative mirror, or a glass partition wall, the same attention to detail and craftsmanship applies.

The bespoke innovative designs are excecuted by using a variety of techniques and processes. In particular his love and passion for sandblasting. By combining the techniques of deep carving, shading, surface blasting, multiple layers and using various resists to create the beautiful 3 dimensional light and shade effects on the finished piece of glass.

In addition and complimenting the sandblasting, he sometimes includes handmade, kiln formed, clear and coloured glass pieces which are bonded to a particular surface, adding depth, colour and refractive light to the subject matter.

Finally the art of cold-pour laminating is another process which excites his imagination. There are endless possibilities to explore by pouring a resin in between sheets of glass, then adding the rich opaque and vibrant transparent colours so the end product never ceases to amaze.

Location of the glass project could be in a hotel, restaurant, office space or home, his challenge is to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the client and to enhance the appearance of their surroundings.

Much of Johns success and good fortune he attributes to the practice of Transcendental Meditation. For almost 30 years of doing TM he believes this to be the key to a happy, healthy and contented life.

As an Artist he feels TM is an invaluable tool for tapping into the field of pure consciousness whereby the mind and body are completely rested and energised, profoundly expanding the awareness to the effects of becoming more creative, enthusiastic and intuitive, to name but a few.

In moving forward his desire’s are to continue exploring the exciting potential which glass has to offer and produce decorative glass features that inspire and raise the spirits of the viewer.
