In 2009, the original developer of the waterfront residential regeneration project known as Regatta Quay went into administration. Originally funded and backed by an Irish bank, development was halted midway due to lack of available funds. For almost a decade the unfinished concrete frame stood as reminder of the financial crash and ironically became an iconic landmark of the Ipswich waterfront.

The building attracted much local attention given the size of the structure standing 19 storeys high and big enough to encase 150 apartments, and very quickly became known as The Winerack. The name was born from its unclad state as the concrete formations resembled a traditional wine cellar wall and thanks to a local journalist who started referencing the development as ‘The Winerack’ the name stuck. The concrete frame even had its own Facebook page and followers and many people fondly adopted the new name in an effort to put a positive light on such an overpowering structure and constant reminder of an economic downturn.

In 2015, Ipswich Wharf Developments Ltd changed the buildings’ fate forever and bought the development. By the end of 2017, an innovative funding structure was agreed and work subsequently started in January 2018 to transform the building. As of January 2020, the landmark waterfront development is now the end result of collaborative working and investment between Ipswich Wharf Developments, Homes England and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership.

Each beautifully appointed apartment offers open plan living areas, bespoke fitted kitchens, luxurious bathroom suites and contemporary flooring throughout.
