The bedroom should be an escape from the stresses of daily life. The team at Iggi UK Ltd explain how they create bedroom spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and restful.
You may have exciting, interesting, brave ideas for designing a bedroom, whether for yourself or for a client but time and experience have taught us that when it comes to designing a bedroom, in order to make it truly enjoyed and functional, it needs to be restful. The main objective for anyone is to sleep well in their bedroom so as a designer this is your first priority.
In order to create the best sleep environment we have a few fail safe tips that hopefully won't get in the way of the creative concept.
This might be an obvious one, but many forget it, the mattress needs to be the best quality available and within the budget. There are so many different options here but ideally the client should try them out to make sure its the right feel for him/her.
Along with the mattress, the bed linen is vital, the most elegant and timeless choice would always be crisp white, again in the best cotton. This looks the best in most bedrooms and would create the cosiest sleep.
When designing a bed, you may have grand ideas of a four poster, or a very modern bed, depending on the look you are hoping to achieve. The main thing to remember is when your client is sitting up in bed reading a book, are they comfortable? Often the most comfortable is an upholstered headboard, which is of course possible with most bed designs. So our advice would be always make the headboard area comfortable.
Lighting in a bedroom is key, it needs to be sexy and inviting, as well as restful and calm and also very practical. Bright light is needed to see as this is where most people get dressed and ready for their day. This is a tough brief, so lots of light options are key. Dimmable lights are a must as they can create different moods depending on needs.
In our projects we always try incorporate low lighting such as table lamps or reading lights and a bit of mood lighting perhaps over a chair. If there is a dressing area then a lamp is great here too. This as well as dimmable ceiling lights.
Finally, colour is key. Calming, restful, soothing colours really make all the difference. As much as we love bright and bold colours, a neutral palette is really ideal for the sleep environment. Soft greys, pastels and white are almost always a perfect bedroom choice.
