Abode2 a takes a first look inside a home at The Cortland, a project designed by RAMSA and Olson Kundig, designed by Rodney Lawrence, mixing new and old furniture pieces and striking ombre wallpaper in the living room
A celebration of American craftsmanship, The Cortland represents a unique collaboration between two of the world’s leading architecture practices, Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Olson Kundig. Located across from the Hudson River Park, The Cortland is inspired by West Chelsea’s historical architecture and the neighbourhood’s rich industrial heritage and features a hand-laid brick facade giving the project a distinctly historical feel.
Each of the architectural homes at The Cortland was thoughtfully designed for the needs of today’s modern buyer providing a high level of flexibility throughout as each home features high ceilings, open plan living and dining areas and numerous multifunctional spaces.
Similar to a five-star resort, the amenity program is the heart of the residential experience at The Cortland. Designed by Olson Kundig and curated by Related Life, the amenities have all the style and sophistication of a private members club in the city.
The Rodney Lawrence designed home at The Cortland is a two-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home. The expansive, open-plan living and dining areas feature a 26-foot corner great room, a kitchen with a custom Olson Kundig-designed Jackbox, warm wood flooring, and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Rodney Lawrence’s interiors are fresh, young and comfortable. Rodney and his team really established a sense of place, drawing inspiration from West Chelsea, to create a home that blends contemporary design with timeless pieces and amazing art to achieve a modern, unique atmosphere. The walls of the main living space are covered in a custom ombre wallpaper by Trove and create their own light - brightening and softening the space that accommodates intimate family moments, but can also be used for entertaining and hosting friends and family.
The classic and timeless architecture of Robert A.M. Stern and the simple and structured lines of Olson Kundig’s interiors are very unique, but equally elegantly proportioned. For this home, Rodney wanted to bring a very subtle reference to nature - so very often incorporated into Olson Kundig’s designs and juxtaposed with their minimalist forms. Organic and flowing lines, like the living room sofa and rug, permeate the spaces, softening the design and adding a sense of warmth to the home.
