Contemporary Living in Wimbledon

06.03.20

Caley House, Leopold Road, Wimbledon Village is the former home and private gallery of late art critic and author Brian Sewell. The residence of Britain’s most famous yet controversial art critic, has been transformed into nine contemporary homes by award-winning property developer West Eleven. Interested parties can now visit the extraordinary show home fully furnished by Interior Designer, Amelia McNeil.

Caley House is a boutique walled development, comprising three new mews houses that seamlessly blend alongside the original building that contains five apartments and a coach house, all conveniently nestled between Wimbledon Park and the Village. The development offers residents the perfect harmony of contemporary and stylish interiors, accompanied by period, charm and characterful exteriors.

Sublime Interiors

The interiors have been carefully considered to reflect the tranquillity and maturity of the setting and character of the buildings. The aim was to emulate styling in a clean and contemporary aesthetic that stayed true to the heart and soul of the original building. Inspired by nature, a warm neutral colour palette adorns the walls, floors and ceilings whilst hand-picked furniture adds bursts of earthy autumn browns and garden greens that extends into the finishing touches such as soft furnishings, plants and lamps.

The apartment and Coach House interiors nod to their Edwardian heritage, with finishes such as brushed brass fittings, inky hues and sensitively restored “Arts Movements” stained glass windows. In subtle contrast the new mews homes adopt a Scandinavian feel with clean white stone and sisal feature floors.

Relaxed and Luxurious Setting

Tranquil, landscaped and mature, private gardens, including a lily pond Monet would’ve been proud of, surround the property, providing residents a perfect haven in which to escape. Each home has a private outdoor space to relax and entertain in, they come in the form of patios, balconies and gardens. The private balconies overlook the grounds and are on offer for first and second floor apartments whilst the private patios are for the ground floor apartments and each mews house has its own mature garden. All options provide a particular lifestyle to residents, the gardens are a canvas for horticulture, the balconies are a wonderful sun trap and the patios offer a calming spot to relax with a newspaper.

Originally one mansion, Jo Cowen Architects have risen to the challenge to create five elegant, light filled apartments that don’t compromise on space, whilst the mews houses are contemporary, open-plan homes that offer something a little different. Both the conversion and mews houses have been designed to ensure natural light fills each room, including a wealth of generously sized windows, high ceilings and clever roof lighting. There’s a natural fluidity between rooms and ample storage spaces, providing ideal living spaces for today’s modern home buyer. The open plan kitchen and living room have been strategically placed at the heart of all the homes in Caley House to encourage harmonious, integrated living.

Annika Prince, Development Manager for Caley House comments, “When transforming this beautiful, boutique development, we knew it was imperative that any architectural intervention was sensitive to the character and context of the place, this goes for the interiors too. For us, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, which is why it’s so crucial that the interiors married old and new in a timeless, graceful style for modern living and with Amelia’s help, we’re confident that this is a winning concept.

Interior Designer, Amelia McNeil, adds: “We were keen from the start to create something in keeping with the history and setting of Caley House but updated in style, which I think we’ve achieved. This is such a unique property and it’s been so rewarding watching it’s transformation over the last 12 months with such skill and craftsmanship to create nine truly desirable homes.”
