212box’s dedication to luxurious detail and comfort is balanced with a prioritization of sustainability, often achieved through creative and thoughtful upcycling, collaborations with local and environmentally-conscious designers, as well as use of new and effective sustainable materials.

Use of natural and local materials was a core consideration for 212box’s work on Christian Louboutin’s striking flagship store in the Miami Design District and serves as a testament to the sustainability effort in the city. With the interior in soft bark walls of white birch, gold birch and pin cherry accents, the exterior is clad in its entirety in poplar tree bark - providing a stark contrast to the predominantly clean, white buildings that surround it and serving as a welcome introduction of natural materials to the area. Inspired by the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris, the store also features reclaimed panels from a 1970s Parisian office building, while locally sourced Oolite stone, white travertine and coral stone add a luxurious touch to other interior features.

And, in fact, several discarded pieces from this Christian Louboutin project were instead used in 212box’s founder Eric Clough’s own New York City apartment, offering an example of the firm’s fun and playful approach to upcycling. After Clough spent time clearing out his offices and sorting through leftover materials from several of 212box’s past projects, he decided to incorporate several of these materials into his son Lucien’s bedroom. A batch of reclaimed tin was installed on the wall behind the bed, while an unused rug emblazoned with a tiger - leftover from the Christian Louboutin project - was also placed in the space.

Meanwhile, 212box’s partnership with flooring supplier Foresso, who provided flooring for the firm’s penthouse project in the Arabella Building in Houston, Texas, demonstrates an emphasis on working with suppliers that really make a difference. Extending ethics to every aspect of their business, Foresso uses offcut timber, wood waste, mineral powders, 0 percent VOC bio-resin, and FSC birch plywood; their products are plastic-free; and less than 5 percent of their waste goes into landfill (the rest is recycled).
