Thousands of UK university graduates, are seeking compensation for disrupted education during the Covid-19 pandemic through the Student Group Claim website, alleging that the remote learning they received did not match the quality of the in-person education they paid £9,000 per year for. With some claiming that they had only one in-person class, never met their tutors face-to-face, and had to buy their own software. Others say they missed critical studio access for over a year and had to rush through practical work later.
Universities involved defended their actions, citing rapidly changing government guidelines during the pandemic. However, solicitor Shimon Goldwater, involved in the claims, argues that students should be reimbursed for the difference between in-person and online education. Over 155,000 people have signed up to the legal action, with a landmark trial against University College London scheduled for 2026.
