This Eating Disorder Awareness Week; Schoen Clinic UK has announced it has partnered with Beat, the UK’s Eating Disorder Charity, to help raise awareness of eating disorders and address the challenges patients face on the road to recovery.

Schoen Clinic UK - the LaingBuisson Private Hospital Group of the Year 2020 - creates peer-reviewed clinical research on eating disorders and is a leading contributor at the International Eating Disorder Conference 2022 having had 10 pieces of research or practice leadership accepted. It’s 3 dedicated facilities use multi-disciplinary teams offering a holistic service for patients with eating disorders in London, York and Birmingham.

Founded in 1989, Beat exists to end suffering and loss of life among people affected by eating disorders. Working both nationally and locally, they help people to understand their illness and move towards recovery. Beat helps families know how to support loved ones into, through and out of treatment. They train professionals to support early treatment seeking and they campaign for better government policy and health services, always guided by their beneficiaries’ experience and clinicians’ expertise.

With a shared vision of focussing on the road to recovery, the Schoen Clinic / Beat partnership will help drive necessary education, guidance and fundraising initiatives and make sure everyone has access to the right treatments.

This Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Beat is calling for all UK medical schools and foundation year programmes to include proper training on eating disorders.

Eating disorders are devastating mental illnesses that affect 1 in 50 people in the UK.
Recovery is possible. But we rely on our GPs to spot early warning signs (which may have nothing to do with weight or appearance).
The average GP gets less than two hours training on eating disorders, in their entire medical degree —and 1 in 5 UK medical schools don’t provide any training on eating disorders at all.
This delays access to treatment and leads to misdiagnosis of eating disorders — the consequences of which can be devastating.

The good news is that this training exists. Beat has developed comprehensive courses for medical students, which some UK medical schools have started to teach. But ‘some’ is not enough.
