Australia is set to welcome more international students in 2026, with the government increasing the national cap to 295,000—up from 270,000 this year.
While the new limit remains slightly below pre-pandemic highs, officials say the move strikes a balance between supporting the economy and managing pressures on housing and public services.
The updated policy features tailored quotas for specific education sectors and includes exemptions for students transitioning between visa categories or programs. Authorities also emphasised regional participation, aiming to distribute the benefits of international education more evenly across the country.
