Allure Of The Algarve

16.07.21

Portugal’s Algarve has been a favourite with holidaymakers for decades, with visitors flocking to the upscale resorts clustered around Faro Airport in the centre of the region. However, head further west and an entirely different experience awaits.

Abode2 spoke to Alda Filipe, Sales & Marketing Director, Kronos Homes, who explained “The thing that strikes me afresh every time I explore the Western Algarve is the beauty of the natural surroundings. From the rugged Atlantic coast to the Monchique mountain range, there’s this abundance of nature all around. It’s something we sought to celebrate and build in harmony with right from the outset at Palmares Ocean Living & Golf.”

First and foremost, the Western Algarve is renowned for its beaches. The huge rollers coming in from the Atlantic on the region’s western coast have long been a favourite with surfers. Those who prefer more sedate waves, meanwhile, have their pick of stunning cove beaches along the Western Algarve’s southern coastline.

Praia de Dona Ana, at Lagos, is the quintessential picture postcard beach, from its crumbly limestone cliffs to the translucent blue water that quietly laps the shore, while brightly painted local fishing boats bob gently up and down. Other must-visit beaches include Odeceixe and Amoreira on the western coast, along with Arrifana and Amado for surfers. Praia do Camilo, meanwhile, is known for its calm waters and superb swimming and snorkelling conditions. For kayaking and other water sports, Praia de Batata is a must.

The Western Algarve is a water sports hotspot. Holidaymakers who fancy trying kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kite surfing and more will find everything they need. Grotto trips and Lagos bay cruises are available for those who prefer a more sedate pace, while extreme adventure lovers can enjoy the buzz of cliff jumping, ocean swimming and climbing between Sagres and Lagos.

Lagos itself is the Western Algarve’s main town. By day, it’s the perfect spot to stroll through the pretty streets, shopping and pausing to enjoy tiny, strong coffees and super-sweet cakes when the mood takes. The city is also packed with historic and cultural attractions, having been one of the key cities in the Age of Discoveries. Lagos Cultural Centre, the Route of Portuguese Discoveries walking route and the museum and art gallery within the Slave Market – the building that housed Europe’s first slave market – all make for compelling visits. By night, Lagos provides a buzzing, vibrant atmosphere, with some superb restaurants and bars that are just the right level of lively.

The slightly quieter city of Silves is also a lovely place to wander and enjoy the laidback Portuguese lifestyle. Along the coast, there are also plenty of charming fishing villages to explore, as well as a host of activities, from oyster tours to treetop adventures.

Head inland a few miles and don a stout pair of walking shoes and it’s possible to scale Fóia – the main peak of the Serra de Monchique and the Algarve’s tallest mountain, at 902 metres – in a couple of hours. Views from the peak, with the Algarve spread out below, are wonderful.

Alda Filipe summarised “The Western Algarve strikes the perfect balance between catering to tourists and second homeowners and retaining its authentic character and quiet charm. It’s the ideal place to get away from the stresses of modern life and reconnect with nature. The outdoor lifestyle promotes healthy exercise and positive mental health, while offering a more relaxed pace of life than many of us are used to.”

The Western Algarve is easy to reach from the UK, with the flight to Faro taking under three hours. It’s then just an hour’s drive along the well-maintained motorway to Lagos – and to Palmares Ocean Living & Golf.

Owned and operated by Kronos Homes, the resort has been created to forge an exceptional harmony between its residences, outstanding golf facilities and the ocean. The natural amphitheatre in which it sits delivers spectacular views over the estuary of Alvor, with the construction density of 5.7% maximising those views across the entire development. Meanwhile, the vast expanse of golden sand at Meia-Praia is just 800 metres away.

The phased building work will see a total of 460 homes built, including 357 apartments and 103 villas. There will be two five-star hotels (one is already operational) and wellness facilities that include a pool.
