The historic market town of Windsor will be in the spotlight across the globe this weekend, as it plays host to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Abode2 takes a closer look at the property market in this Berkshire town
The long-anticipated nuptials of Prince Harry and his actress wife-to-be will be taking place at Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel on Saturday, and this week the town has been working overdrive to get the bunting up ahead of the ceremony.
Windsor has the charm of London without the blue-chip hustle and bustle, with an easy commute of less than an hour into the centre of the capital. Popular with high net worth buyers, Windsor in incredible well-kept and has retained some historic charm as a largely unspoiled market town with all mod cons.
Its aesthetic appeal – and of course royal connection – means the town is thronged with tourists in summer, particularly around the 900-yhear-old castle which dominates the skyline and the town’s heritage, history and setting. Windsor’s charm means it is highly sought after when it comes to property – keeping prices high.
Buyers will pay a premium to live right in town. A two-bedroom flat would cost £400,000 in the heart of Windsor, or from £280,000 on the fringes. A three-bedroom house in town could be anywhere from £500,000 to £800,000, while on the fringes buyers could pick up a property for around £400,000.
The town seamlessly blends a selection of mega-mansions with beautiful Victorian terraced houses. One example of the highest end of the market is the former home of Bee Gees lead singer, Sir Barry Gibb, located on the edge of Windsor Great Park, which is now on the market for £3,500,000. The current owner bought the impressive Berkshire house from the Staying Alive musician in 1976.
The five-bedroom family property covers 3,839 square feet and the estate holds 4.23 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland style grounds include a small lake with a bridge, stables, a 'secret' Italian style garden, terracing and covered barbecue area.
On the more attainable side of the market, there is the new Thameside development from Shanly Homes. The development occupies a rare riverside site and consists of four four-bed townhouses and 24 two and three-bed apartments.
All the houses and most of the flats have balconies overlooking the Thames, are kitted out with top-end kitchens and bathrooms and prices range from £610,000 to £2.695million, through Savills.
As for amenities, the town hosts a number of quaint shops and cafes, as well as and an arts and crafts market in the Windsor Royal shopping centre. There is also the annual Windsor Fringe Festival and of course, the renowned Royal Windsor Racecourse.
