Simon O’Rourke reveals his inspiration for some of his latest projects
Simon’s Inspiration
I draw inspiration from life, the colours, shapes, and contours of people and animals. Being a sculptor with an illustration background, light and shade fascinate me, and the challenge of creating contrast in texture and form is one I love.
I see my art as a way of telling stories, and I love to give the viewer a sense of having witnessed a snippet of a story, or a captured moment in time.
Example shown: “Brother Ambrose paused from his daily reading, and glanced over his shoulder to catch the last of the sunlight casting long shadows through the archways in the cloister.”
My primary tool is the chainsaw. It is a potentially destructive tool, but I see it as a very expressive one. The textures and surfaces it leaves in the wood are exciting and energetic. However loud and brash it may seem, for me it is an extension of my movements, and is, at its most simple, a very quick way of removing the materials I don't need from the piece.
For me, the human form is the most challenging of subjects, with proportion and form taking precedence over finish. I love to leave contrasting textures between cloth and skin, as shown in the example sculptures given here.
Simon’s Current Projects
The majority of my current projects are for private gardens, and range in theme, from wildlife to historical figures. The sculptures may be created in my workshop, and transported to their final destination, or created using an existing tree stump in the grounds or gardens of the client’s home. I work closely with each client to find out exactly what they want, and based on the surrounding environment and location I design something that will compliment and enhance that space.
Some of my sculptures incorporate seating or other furniture, and having a dedicated and skilled carpenter working for me, we can combine our skills to produce beautiful, yet practical artwork.
Other projects have included writing a children's story, and creating an entire sculpture trail based on that story. This is a wonderful way of using my illustration background, and of course, thoroughly enjoyable!
Above all, I love to see the reactions of my clients, and to make something that someone will treasure for many years is thrilling, and a fantastic honour.
