Founded in 2017, Moscow Capital Club, Russia’s only private membership club, has been a witness of a change of epochs, generations and rulers. James Matthews finds out what members can expect at this most exclusive of locations
Like Moscow itself, the Moscow Capital Club, set at Povarskaya Street, is an incredibly resilient icon. It has survived wars, revolutions and popular uprisings, having previously been a venue for balls, coronations and ceremonial dinners. In 1934, it housed the Central House of Literators (Centralniy Dom Literatorov) and later, the eponymous restaurant. It now hosts the Moscow Capital Club, a member of International Associate Clubs (IAC).
Moscow Capital Club is an exclusive, private locale, closed to outsiders and the press, where business leaders as well as other prominent and successful individuals can meet and communicate in an informal, comfortable atmosphere. A visit is also not complete without dinner at one of the best restaurants in Moscow located within the club.
The interior has been beautifully designed to recreate the splendour of the silver age of Russian culture, with antique balustrades and bas-reliefs throughout the Oak Hall main reception room. The staircase in the Hall is a masterpiece; built without a single nail or screw. The fireplace is equally impressive. Guests can also hire additional rooms such as the Cigar Room and the Cabinet Room.
A menu of authentic Russian cuisine has been created by top Moscow chef Alexander Popov, with organic dishes bursting with flavour and presented with a splendour to match the opulent surroundings. With so much luxury on display, it’s little wonder that former US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush have chosen to dine here. Situated in the centre of the city between Bolshaya Nikitskaya 53 and Povarskaya Ulitsa 50, it’s advisable to book your visit in advance through IAC or directly with the club to avoid disappointment.
