Mountain Majesty

Hitting the right notes when designing a state-of-the-art mountain retreat is a fine art – Abode2 recently visited the sleek slopes of Courchevel to view the latest ultra-luxury ski chalet from Morpheus London

Courchevel 1850, home to breath-taking Alpine views, has a new addition to its residential repertoire. ­The Lodge, the brand new five-bedroom chalet from Morpheus London (part of its Six Senses residences collection), is immaculately designed and built to fit perfectly into the mountain landscape.

Set across three floors with five luxurious en-suite bedrooms, the property recently won Best Ski Chalet at the International Design & Architecture Awards and the reasons for this accolade are clear to see. In addition to the artfully designed living and dining areas, and state-of-the-art bespoke kitchen, the residence also boasts its own fitness room, cinema room plus a large private spa area including a sauna, hammam, Jacuzzi and treatment room.

­The Lodge, which has been fully-furnished by international design house Morpheus, features handpicked furniture and accessories throughout, beautifully chosen to complement the architecture; a contrast between rough and smooth that’s represented both in the angular shapes of the bespoke pieces and the selection of luxurious finishes, including bronzed and smoked glass, veneer oak, contemporary concrete, leather, rich faux fur and Italian two-tone marble.

­The living area is a haven of tranquillity and comfort with earthy, natural tones and a wealth of textures to reflect the mountain location. ­The most stunning feature of this room is the exquisitely designed bespoke chandelier with single pendant lights; each individually made Venetian glass piece representing a shard of broken ice, breathing fresh, whiteout air throughout this warm, indulgent space.

The Master bedroom is a soft, warm space filled with rich chocolate-brown fabrics and timber tones with quirky angular features; the structural beams framing a magnificent triangular window that opens onto breath-taking views of the Alpine surrounds.

Speaking to Abode2, Anna Czarnowska, Senior Designer at Morpheus London and Lead Designer on the Lodge said; “­The aim was to come up with an original design and not repeat the typical features and motifs popular in other Alpine resorts. Morpheus starts every project with a dream – an abstract and non-design related concept that helps to develop an original idea.

“In the case of ­the Lodge, inspiration was drawn from the transition period between winter and spring; when the ice starts to melt revealing the hard surfaces underneath.”

She continues: “­The facet shapes and the contrast between polished surfaces and rough textures combined with a consistent colour pallet of earthly taupes and cool greys and whites is the main thread throughout the chalet, visible in everything from the base build through to the carefully chosen accessories.”

­The Lodge is fully serviced by the Six Senses concierge team - providing chefs and housekeepers on demand. Setting it apart from other Alpine residential developments is the Six Senses service: owners of ­the Lodge will have 24/7 access to a dedicated team offering shuttle services, private catering and bespoke transport solutions.

Residents will also enjoy membership to the Six Senses Spa. World-renowned for its holistic offering, the spa at Six Senses Residences Courchevel offers bespoke programmes and an organically designed environment to ensure relaxation after an active day on the slopes. ­The spa features five treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool, wet facilities including saunas, steam and Kneipp path, a separate relaxation lounge, a gym and a studio for wellness classes.
