One of the steps that Kata Rocks is taking to support the local community is in its association and links with The Good Shepherd project, led by a number of community leaders, including Sister Lakana. This project has as its principle focus to improve the lives of hundreds of migrant workers and their families from Burma: http://www.thegoodshepherd.info/; in essence, it is a vital force in the worldwide fight against human trafficking, and on improving the adverse effects suffered by migrant laborers.
The Good Shepherd organization is involved primarily in supporting women and children; providing a place of shelter, a learning center for schooling and vocational education – as well as producing handicrafts that can be sold to support the community. The project helps migrants to understand the local language, assists with legal documentation and offering opportunities that would not otherwise be available to these people.
One of the handicraft projects supported by the association is that of the production of specialized soap – made from rice bran oil, virgin coconut oil, honey, mangosteen, and charcoal; this is a project that helps to make money for The Good Shepherd as well as providing skills, training and knowledge in the operation of a small business. The soap produced for Kata Rocks will be made from a special recipe – using cold pressed, organic coconut oil and all natural extracts, with no colors or added fragrances.
The predominant fundraising project of The Good Shepherd community is in the building of a learning center, which readers of this blog wishing to donate may do so here: http://www.theschoolphuket.com/ and by emailing Sister Lanaka – lakanargs@gmail.com.
