Luxury, sustainable homes are gaining in popularity as we all become more eco-conscious. Abode2 caught up with Mike Webb, Director of Seaton Beach Developments, to find out about their latest development.
Why did you choose to build luxury apartments on the Devon Coast?
We spotted the opportunity in May 2015, as Seaton is very much up and coming, following an extensive regeneration project in the town. With an amazing site, directly on the beach of the Jurassic Coast, we felt that high-quality apartments would offer exceptional homes to discerning buyers. Devon has become more sought-after as people search for staycation options in the UK, following the pandemic. Seafront properties are particularly in demand and we have sold all our 2-bedroom apartments at full asking price. We then launched our exclusive 3-bedroom Penthouse to the market and again this has been met with interest.
From conception to completion, there are so many stages involved in creating a luxury development like Seaton Beach, what was your favourite stage of the project?
The planning process took 2 years and then detailing and procurement a further year. We became very excited when we finally broke ground. Personally, seeing the beautiful external mosaics installed that added stunning, unique detail to the building was a moving moment. Also, receiving the Passivhaus Plaque was very rewarding, as we are very proud of our commitment to sustainable building practices. Our proudest moment was being awarded “Best Sustainable Residential Development in the UK” by the International Property Awards. We have since received further awards, making the 5 year plus journey worthwhile.
There is a great flow of design from exterior to interior of these properties. How important do you think the linking of design ideas is, in a project such as this?
The design was key to making a visual statement that Seaton is very much “back in the game”. Iconic architecture like this must stand the test of time in this outstanding marine location, hence we specified materials that would stand the test of time, both aesthetically and in their durability.
We wanted to create a unique building to show that Seaton is now a very desirable location.
Creating an environmentally friendly development was at the heart of this project. Can you tell us more about why it was key and how you implemented your ideas?
Seaton Beach is the first Multi block building in the UK to be “Passivhaus Plus” certified. This essentially means a luxury building with low energy demand that produces, via the solar panels, more power than its primary energy needs. This building is one of a handful in the UK to be 2050 ready.
