Designing Upon Reflection

London interior design and architecture studio Ward & Co has unveiled its latest project, inspired by the historic surroundings of Covent Garden and its iconic British architecture. The three bedroom lateral apartment, which is located within a Grade II* listed building in the heart of the capital’s West End, showcases Ward & Co’s signature use of bold colour and strong contextuality.

Founded by Sarah Ward and daughter Rosie, Ward & Co prides itself on its deep respect for culture, passion for authenticity and delivering well-balanced, contemporary designs with genuine longevity.

Rosie Ward, Creative Director at Ward & Co, comments; “Our brief for this project was to create a space that reflects the listed status of the building, the cultural heritage of the location and yet in-keeping with the archetypal Covent Garden resident. Every element of the design, from the choice of materials and furnishings to textures and colours, have been selected to reflect and celebrate these elements whilst considering the fabulous aspect and views over the historic Piazza. We have worked together with local artisans to capture the elegance and essence of the location with a vibrant twist and contemporary touches.”

Considering both the interior and exterior architecture as well as cultural heritage, Ward & Co commissioned a hand-crafted library to encase 400 books, displayed as a feature wall in the apartment’s spacious 28 feet reception room. Each book was chosen to honour a year in Covent Garden’s history, since its inception as London’s first modern square in 1630. The project also features a range of bespoke and repurposed furniture pieces and specially commissioned artwork, including a pair of striking oil paintings by a talented young artist, reflecting the views of the adjacent Piazza and nearby hustle and bustle of the former market square.

The chosen colour palette across the apartment of sumptuous blues was felt to be inherently ‘British’, reflecting the level of craftsmanship displayed throughout, whilst addition of flexible seating, wireless Sonos speakers and scene setting lighting system brings a level of liveable luxury to the space, seamlessly transitioning it from ‘casual everyday’ to ‘elegant entertaining’ as needed. In the kitchen, Ward & Co complemented the stone-topped cabinetry with satin gold taps, distinctly warm tones and added padded faux-leather bar stools for a contemporary yet practical look. The master bathroom, which has been clad in natural stone, provides the perfect backdrop for the unique Picasso resin freestanding bath, elegantly illuminated by discrete uplights and offset by gunmetal brassware; the perfect spot to unwind away from the lively cobbled streets below.

The apartment spans over 2,100 square foot and is being brought to market this summer by Capital & Counties Properties Plc (Capco), owners of the landmark Covent Garden estate.
