While it’s been a challenging time for many industries, airlines in particular have been hit hard by the global pandemic. By extension, the travel options for both people and pets have been extremely limited despite many still needing to relocate for work or family reasons.
In April 2020, premium pet travel company, Global Pet Relocation, was contacted by one dog owner eager to be reunited with his Great Dane, Iroco, in the Cayman Islands. In March, as airlines had begun to shut down routes around the world, Iroco’s owner, Nigel, urgently pressed ahead with his plans to relocate, leaving Iroco behind in the UK.
Beautiful boy Iroco weighed in at 65kg (143lbs) and was nearly 5 feet long at two years old, meaning he would need to travel in the pet cabin of an aircraft and in a custom-built sky kennel. With no scheduled flights available, Global Pet Relocation got to work on finding a way to reunite Nigel and Iroco. Using their excellent working relationship with British Airways’ live animal department, the team arranged for Iroco to travel on an outbound repatriation flight to Grand Cayman.
As these special flights were being scheduled at short notice, Global Pet Relocation kept in constant contact with British Airways and made sure all the paperwork was in place for Iroco to travel immediately.
Finally in June they received the good news that Iroco could fly and would soon be reunited with Nigel. After touching down on the island, Iroco passed through local customs checks and was picked up at the airport by a pet chauffeur to finally bring him home.
While it’s never easy being separated from a much-loved pet, especially across continents, ensuring that both animals and owners have a low-stress experience gives all the best possible start to a new life overseas.
